   A detection dogor snifferdog is a dog that is trained to and works at using its senses (almost always the sense of smell) to detect substances such as explosives, illegal drugs, or blood.侦测犬是专以自己的嗅觉来测探爆炸物、毒品和血液痕迹的警犬。

　　

   这里的detection dog/sniffer dog就是这一类靠鼻子查案的警犬，那么专负责检测爆炸物的“搜爆犬”就是explosive detection dog。这里我们是用explosive这个词来表示“爆炸物”，而不是bomb，因为explosive是用作“炸药”这个概念的总称，像装载爆炸物的车辆，就可以说是explosive-ridden vehicles。

　　

   同样，我们更加熟悉的缉毒犬，就是drug detection dog。那种平时用来追寻犯人的警犬不算在detection dogs的范畴，而被称为search dogs
