The photo on the right is of another champion male that shows the typical markings found on a black headed tricolor. Please note that it is perfectly acceptable to have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi that is black and tan with no white, but a Pembroke Welsh Corgi that is black and white with no tan present is a mismark. The tan is often not present at birth, but appears within a few weeks after birth.

This beautiful head study of a champion Pembroke Welsh Corgi male shows a red dog with a cream mask. This photo depicts a champion Pembroke Welsh Corgi male which clearly depicts the sable and white color. A dog may be lightly sabled, with just a scattering of black-tipped hairs over the withers, to one who is so heavily sabled that from a distance he almost appears black. This male exhibits a head that carries the distinctive "cap" with a widow's peak and black on back and edges of his ears and is sabled around his longer neck ruff with some sabling over the body, down the back and on the hair covering the tailset. Note the lighter face markings on the cheeks and the lighter shading on the pants. He also carries a narrow blaze on his head. Below is a close up photo of the head of a sable male with the distinguishing sable markings.

The distinctive black head markings are easy to see in this photograph. You can see the black edges to his ears and the widow's peak on the head above the eyes. You can even see the lighter hair underneath the black tipping.

The second photo shows a red Pembroke Welsh Corgi as a whitely. A whitely is a very serious color fault for the show ring. Whitelies should not be bred. No different in personality from a Corgi with proper markings, they make excellent pets.

A mismark is a very serious color fault in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi for the show ring. A mismark is described in the standard as "Self colors with any area of white on back between the withers and the tail, on sides between elbows and back of hindquarters, or on ears. Black with white markings and no tan present."
There should be no white above an imaginary horizontal line drawn from the elbow through the stifle joint. White should not extend far into the upper arm and shoulder blade areas, nor should it appear on the thigh as other than a narrow stifle trim. Some red or tan, however pale, must appear on a white-marked black dog. Mismarks should not be bred. No different in personality from a Corgi with proper markings, they make excellent pets.
